Foundational Drills for Machine Shorthand Accuracy and Speed
Author: Carol Jochim
5.5” w x 8.5” h, top-bound (sits well on an easel for easy viewing)

Ever feel like you’re “all thumbs” and mix up your vowels?
Do you find certain consonant combinations slow you down?
Do you fear hearing “big words” in dictation and on tests?

Fast Track to Machine Shorthand Speed has 534 exercises targeted at identifying and eliminating these speed-killing hesitations.  With this book you will see measurable results!

Drills 001-107 focus on fingering accuracy.

  • Word-based drills because challenging finger combinations are affected by the other keys included in the stroke.
  • Word-based drills because sometimes the accuracy issue is transitioning from one position to another.
  • Word-based drills because almost anything can be stroked accurately in isolation. It’s execution in context that is the issue.
  • Word-based drills give your thumbs an excellent workout in establishing vowel accuracy while focusing on specific consonant sounds.

Drills 001-107 utilize a metronome to establish rhythmic writing, pinpoint areas of hesitation, and provide measurable feedback on your progress.  An extensive introduction to the why and the how of doing the drills to their maximum benefit is included.  Free metronome apps are available online.

Drills 1001-1427 are multisyllabic word drills grouped by ending sound.  Knowing you have a consistent, accurate response is key to overcoming hesitation when writing multisyllabic words.   By drilling in groups of like words, you have an opportunity to determine your methodology for breaking those words into strokes or, in some cases, including all of the sounds in the stroke.  These drills can be done in order or you can use the index of drills to find the ones you need most and start on those.  Audio for these “big word” drills is included on a USB drive.  This USB drive utilizes DRM (Digital Rights Management) and works on Windows and Mac computers.  It must be in the drive to play the files.

This book has no suggested steno outlines making this a theory-independent speed and accuracy tool.  Use the outlines from your theory, suggestions from others, or your own creations.
